A letter of recommendation is required by graduate schools, internship programs, some volunteer work, and jobs. It is a letter recommending you for the position, written by someone who has knowledge of your skills and competencies and has an advisory or supervisory role. A good letter discusses your qualities and characteristics, using examples from your history to support its claims. Most letters of recommendation for graduate study are written by faculty who have had direct contact with the applicant.

To Whom It May Concern:

It is with great pleasure that I am recommending Rose Berdinger to you. I am the Head Sales Manager at “company name” and Rose has been under my supervision from November of 2000 to August of 2004 as a saleswoman.

Rose would be a great asset to any company. She is one of the brightest employees that I have ever had.

Rose is such a quick learner. Within her first two weeks at “company name” she had learned all the product names, their features, and how they work. It normally takes a new employee at least two months to get familiar with all the products that we sell.

Rose's drive has led her to great success at “company name”. She has had the honor of receiving the "Top Sales Person of the Month Award" ten times in her last year at Vacuums Plus, which is a feat that no employee has ever achieved here before.

I believe that Rose Berdinger will be an excellent fit for your company. Rose has been nothing short of an exemplary employee. If you have any further questions, feel free to contact me at (555) 555-555 and I'll be happy to answer any questions you have.

Sincerely,

Re: Recommendation for Sharon Westman

Dear Hiring Manager:

I was initially impressed with Sharon Westman's enthusiasm, communication skills and professional demeanor when I hired her four years ago as a customer service rep within “company name”. During the two years Sharon reported to me (I have since moved on to a different department), she consistently demonstrated all of these qualities and more, and I heartily endorse her for any customer service position.

Sharon is reliable and dedicated. Her ability to calm angry or frustrated customers is unparalleled, and it is because of her excellence in this area that I repeatedly asked her to mentor new employees. Sharon multitasks effectively and is able to handle a high-volume workload.

Of particular value to me as a former manager was Sharon's team player mind-set, enthusiastic embrace of change, ability to work with minimal supervision and unwavering commitment to exceeding customer expectations. I regularly received unsolicited commendations from customers commending Sharon's outstanding level of service, professionalism and follow-through.

Organized and diligent, Sharon quickly learned technology systems and software that were unfamiliar to her when she first started with “company name”.

Sharon is a hardworking, top-performing customer service professional. She has my highest recommendation, and I am happy to furnish more details if you would like additional information.

Sincerely,

Carla Pederson

Good Letters of Recommendation

What Qualifies as a Good Letter of Recommendation?

MBA program applicants often have a difficult times procuring recommendation letters that work. If you are wondering what qualifies as a good letter of recommendation, who better to ask than an actual admissions representative? Here's what they had to say:

Good Letters of Recommendation Show Strengths and Weaknesses

''The best letters of recommendation highlight with examples both the strengths and weakness of the candidate in light of a peer group. Typically, admissions offices limit essay length, but we all encourage recommenders to take the space they need to help build your case.'' - Rosemaria Martinelli Associate Dean of Student Recruitment & Admissions at Chicago Graduate School of Business

Good Letters of Recommendation are Detailed

"When choosing someone to write a letter of recommendation, don’t get wrapped up in title, you want someone who can really answer the questions. If they can’t answer the questions, they aren’t really helping you. You want some one who knows what you have done and what your potential is." - Wendy Huber, the Associate Director of Admissions at the Darden School of Business

Good Letters of Recommendation are Insightful

"Letters of recommendation are one of the few components of an application that are submitted by an objective third party. They provide important insight into an applicant's professional abilities and characteristics. We ask for two letters of recommendation, ideally from professionals as opposed to professors, and one is required from a current, direct supervisor. It's important to find people who can provide true insight into your professional accomplishments and potential to be a future leader." - Isser Gallogly, Executive Director of MBA Admissions at NYU Stern

Good Letters of Recommendation are Professional

"The two letters of recommendation that you submit should be professional in nature. Your recommenders may be anyone (current/former supervisor, former professors, etc.) who is able to comment on your personal qualities, career potential, and potential to succeed in the classroom. Recommenders should know you personally and be familiar with your work history, credentials, and career aspirations." - Christina Mabley, Director of Admissions at McCombs School of Business
